we have the street side room with two doors opening on to the 11 inch balcony.
The Grand Paris Hotel (so confusing) is the oldest hotel in Porto
It is also kind of a museum....
This hotel is not new , but it is immaculate and very functional
And it sure has character
We have an excellent buffet breakfast....I have French toast....less than - paper thin - crepes...and fabulous rice pudding....and TWO cups of coffee! (39 Euros per night including breakfast)
We ended up buying a city bus tour pass...
which is such a passive tourist thing to do....but with only two days it will give us an over view. It has two routes, one of historical Porto
and one of Porto castles ....I think the modern day castles in Porto now operate as banks!
19 degrees and not even a sniff of rain!
Porto seems like such a mix of old Europe
and uber contempary -
We see plenty of buildings that look like they have been abandoned before completion
There is still building going on as evidenced by the presence of cranes in the city area.
The following picture is of a monument built to honor the Porto fishermen ...it's a large fishing net
We toured a Port winery...the Calem Cave
Our guide tells us that all product bearing a Port label must have been produced with grapes from the Douro valley, similar to Champagne and Bordeaux wines.
The guide also lumped Ice Wine and Canada in the region/wine issue. There are only 29 varieties of grapes used for the productin of Port ...15 red and 14 green. Most Port is a mix of varieties.
We taste tested white port...who knew...Sid enjoyed the red...I thought they were ok, but sweet...as Port is!
Cheers
