155.2 km to Santiago
Last evening we met the Acadians and their guests who have arrived from Ottawa joining them for the last two weeks into Santiago . We enjoyed a pilgrims meal with the usual, except we had grilled sea bass as the main meal.
Once again this morning had rain, but had cleared up by the time we got started. We had a very pleasant first 20 km walk
Mostly along asphalt
Asphalt is not easy for your joints but it is such a treat to be sure footed. We had a small highway to one side of us and to the other side we had a brook that babbled to us along the way. A crossing over the brook
And yet another bell tower
We see a labour intensive sawmill in action
We stop for coffee at Trabadelo just behind this pilgrim
Luckily my judgement days are behind me...
We took the alternate route this morning that guided us around the first mountain instead of up and over it. Given the contition of some of the path we walked on today, I think that was a wise choice.
Many times we cross under the A 6 motorway
And marvel at its construction
A lot of concrete
The view is awesome
We pass by an abandoned building site (we have seen a few of these)
We climb 650 meters in the last 8 km...total ascent is 800 meters. It is our toughest one day climb so far.
Our view from on high
At one point we shared the trail with these girls - we stayed to the left ( they all had horns)
Here Sid is standing in the province of Castille
We eventually get to our destination at 3:30 - it is a long day. We find a place to spend the night
At San Giraldo de Aurillac (40 Euros). Private room and bathroom.
We have a balcony! Our room is spacious and very clean, the building dates back to the 11th century.
The nearby church is the resting place of Don Elais Valina Sampedro (1929- 1990)
He was a parish priest dedicated to preserve and restore the integrity of the caminio - it was his idea to mark the route with the yellow arrow.
...the moon rolls through the night time till daybreak comes around....
