Navarette - Najera (pop 7000) 17.4 km October 3

595 km to Santiago !

We had a much shorter day today-amazing how rest restores the body!

We leave our Hostal
at 8:15 this morning.  We are finding the Hostals to be a good compromise between Princess and Pilgrim requirements! (48Euros) Except we have not found English television anywhere.
On our way out of Navarette
we meet two young men from Poland.  We chat with them for a bit and they leave us behind.  Last night one of he Irish people we met in Roncesvalles was at our Hostal.  He is having serious blister problems, so I give him a blister bandaid that my nurse friend suggested I take along.  There can't be too many people left in Ireland , there are many on the trail.  They can fly return from Dublin to Madrid for 60 euros (less than 100 CAD)
We didn't have the pilgrims breakfast this morning and decide to walk for 2 hours to Ventosa for breakfast.  We meet a couple from Finland who look quite a bit older and way overdressed.  It is interesting to see what people are wearing, often long pants and long sleeved shirts and many wear hiking boots. We have worn a t shirt and shorts every single day.  For breakfast we both have a Spanish omelet, which is what I had yesterday but didn't know what it was.

Sid offers the observation that it is only by walking that we get to see all of these beautiful villages - so true.  For all 17 km today we walk through vineyards.
At this vineyard we notice the grapes have been culled and are lying on the ground -unless this is part of the harvest process
The scenery continues to be beautiful.  After each days summit another spectacular valley lies ahead
There are quite a few bikers on the trail, doesn't really look like too much fun at times, especially when the are carrying their bikes uphill
We pass by this beehive looking shelter

We arrive at Najera around 1pm, our teacher friends are also staying here.
After we have a nap and a shower we do a walkabout of the town, which has rolled up its streets for siesta

We try to visit the Monasterio Santa Maria de la Real

But it too is closed until 4pm, so we have a beer instead and decide to come back later.

When we get back to our Hostal the young Alaskan couple is checking in!
