In Canada we worry about minimum drinking age and all associated very important issues. In Spain, if one is old enough to eat a popcicle then one is old enought to serve beer!
We share some red wine and Gil uses his all purpose coffee mug/wine goblet
When we get back to our albergue the other guests are already waiting for us. There are 8 of us for dinner, German and Spanish folks. We have a mixed salad, hot pumpkin soup, vegetable palella
And a very delicious chocolate crepe for desert. And vino tinto!
We have a good rest and in the morning I have an email from my dear friend Lyla saying she is home from the hospital and on the road to recovery. Such good news!
We leave at 7:30 this morning as we know we have a long walk. At 10 km we stop for breakfast just outside of Villavente at Molino Galoches which is a Casa Rural, a renovated mill by the river. This would be a great place to stay.
We have such a good breakfast there and meet 4 Canadian girls beginning their walk today. They look refreshed, well coiffed , wearing make up and jewellery , their clothes don't stink....and then I see their luggage being transported ahead
Pfft...my outside voice says they are not really pilgrims...my inside voice is coveting the things I know are in those suitcases, like hairspray for example.
We walk through acres and acres of corn
And we have still not been able to figure out this crop that we thought were turnips. Maybe sugar beets?
At Punte de Orbigo we walk across one of the longest (.9 km) and best preserved medieval bridges in Spain dating from the 13th century
We see potatoes being harvested
A day of many crosses
Along the path
A planted grove of trees
And another cross
The soil is very red here now
We pass by a (not hazelnut) chestnut tree laden with fruit...well chestnuts really
Our last cross today is the Santa Toribio
And we see our destination in the background. While the view is beautiful I know we have to climb over those mountains soon....
We are taking a day of rest in Astorga. We arrive to the town ( pop 12,000) at 3pm after really a pleasant walk. We spend the next hour looking for a hotel and settle on the Cuidad de Astorga. It is very nice, looks like a great place for a break. The very sad news about today is that I developed a blister on the heal of my right foot. We both notice that our shoes are really wearing ....
Looking forward to some rest!
